Warm Greetings from Marcel’s Creative Exchange. In October 1970 I was invited by the founder Dr. J.Th.
Giessen, to run and maintain his cultural landmark at the center of Amsterdam. This estate presented the oldest cinema of The Netherlands, ‘De Uitkijk’, and an Art Studio with private quarters.
At that time, the Goethe Institute Amsterdam asked me to host writers (Stipendiates) while they gave
readings at the Amsterdam University. When time passed on, I felt the need to branch out to reach a larger
group of artists. The creative exchange was born.
October 2010 I celebrated my 40th year in business. Throughout these many years I was honored to host all kinds of individuals. Some are interested in design and art, in science, or in just discovering what is the city
all about. A melting pot of people who like to stay here.
The rooms exhibited my work. And some of it is for sale (see gallery). If you’re interested, you can contact me to have a closer look. Please consider the option to be in an inspiring environment in the centre of Amsterdam!
Sincerely,
Marcel van Woerkom
Please note that my guestrooms adheres to the Dutch Bed and Breakfast rules and regulations. Therefore I cannot facilitate more then 4 guests per night. Thanks for understanding.

Biography
Marcel has received international recognition as a graphic designer, and his designs were chosen by UNICEF to be used for theprestigious Dutch Kinderpostzegels. Marcel was also a pioneer of the Dutch National Television Foundation (NTS 1961-1968). See this article for more information (De Spreekbuis, 2010) and www.vormvanvermaak.nl for his work (text in Dutch only). He was one of the designers for the City of Los Angeles, during the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. In addition to a degree in carpentry, which has enabled him to create unique designs throughout the rooms, Marcel studied at the Academy of Art "St. Joost" Breda, The Netherlands, and in 1978, Marcel went to the Academy of Art University in San Fransisco with intentions to reaffirm himself if he iis an artist. Instead of coursework, Marcel gained recognition of his artistic power and helped others obtain grants for their own artistic intentions. He also worked on extensive volunteer projects in Zurich, at Bahnhofstrasse, a studio that at times was used by Pablo Picasso. During that year Marcel had an internship with graphic designer Alfred Weiss.
Cinema 'De Uitkijk'
The oldest cinema of the Netherlands, founded in 1912. An old warehouse on the Prinsengracht was transformed into a filmhouse for the elite, named the City Cinema. In 1929 it was adopted by the Filmliga who changed it’s name to De Uitkijk. The new director, Mannus Franken, was inspired by the French avant-garde cinema’s and wanted to create a similar atmosphere in De Uitkijk. The movies played were chosen by artists and connoisseurs to ensure quality. Franken wanted to create a movietheater in which art was played and no entertainment. Untill today the cinema goes to present famous classic movies in the spirit of Franken. The latest renovation in authentic style, was completed on 30 September 2007. Marcel will provide free tickets to his guests.
